Waterford Upstart: Camp Consonant

Introduction to Camp Consonant

Camp Consonant is a specialized reading support program for Waterford Upstart families, designed to help children who need extra practice with letters. Waterford Upstart’s primary goal is to prepare children for school by building strong reading foundations. Camp Consonant focuses specifically on letter recognition, a key skill for early literacy and a successful start to school.

Currently, Camp Consonant is available by invitation to Utah participants. If you haven't received an invitation, it means Waterford Upstart has determined your child may not need this additional support at this time.

Camp Consonant vs. Waterford Upstart Reading Program

Camp Consonant follows a format similar to your child’s Waterford Upstart reading activities, with a focus on letters and language sounds. Through engaging songs, games, and interactive activities, your child will explore uppercase (A-Z) and lowercase (a-z) letters.

While Waterford Upstart covers a range of reading and pre-reading skills, Camp Consonant specifically targets:

  • Uppercase and lowercase letter identification
  • Letter recognition
  • Phonological awareness (e.g., rhyming, breaking words into sounds)
  • Letter sounds

If your child is enrolled in Camp Consonant, it will replace their regular Waterford Upstart reading activities. You won’t need to complete both programs daily, and math and science activities will remain the same. Participants will continue to earn learner awards following the completion of each daily reading session.

Accessing Camp Consonant Activities

Your child will begin Camp Consonant the same way they access their Waterford Upstart activities. Simply log in to your Waterford Upstart account, select your child’s profile, and click “Start.”

You can also begin the session from the Caregiver profile by clicking the Camp Consonant start button to begin the session from the Caregiver login.

Just like the usual Waterford Upstart activities, your child will get the most out of Camp Consonant if they use it 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Coaches will be available to support families through this process by offering personalized guidance and resources, ensuring that each child thrives throughout this learning journey.
